What is Aarti? - आरती म्हणजे काय?

An Aarti (आरती) is a Hindu devotional ritual where a lamp - usually lit with ghee or camphor - is waved in a circular motion before a deity while a sacred song of praise is sung. The word comes from Sanskrit "Aaratrika", meaning "to remove darkness." The glowing flame symbolises divine light dispelling ignorance.

Aarti is performed daily in millions of Indian homes - at dawn, noon, and especially at Sandhyakaal (dusk). During festivals like Ganeshotsav and Navratri, aarti is performed five times a day with great devotion and community participation.

The five elements of nature are all present in an aarti: fire (the lamp), water (in the conch), air (from the fan/incense), earth (flowers and durva), and space (the sound of the bell). Performing aarti is not just a ritual - it is a complete sensory offering to the divine.

AaratiSangrah provides every major Marathi, Hindi, and Sanskrit aarti in both Devanagari script and Roman transliteration - so every devotee can participate, regardless of script familiarity.

How to Use AaratiSangrah

Get the most out of your daily pooja in 3 easy steps

Browse & Read

Search or browse by deity. Open any aarti - it displays in large, clear Devanagari or Roman script. Tap A+ / A− to adjust font size. The screen never dims, even during long aartis.

Build Your Pothi

Add any aartis to your personal Digital Pothi in the order you want. Or pick a ready template - Ganeshotsav, Navratri, Sandhyakaal, and more - with one click.

Read Hands-Free

Enter Pothi Reader mode - aartis display one by one in full screen. Swipe left/right or tap the arrow to move. The Screen Wake Lock API keeps your screen on so you never need to touch the phone during pooja.

Why AaratiSangrah?

AaratiSangrah was built by devotees, for devotees. We noticed that most aarti resources were either PDFs not readable on mobile, images with tiny text, or videos you have to pause. During an actual puja - when your hands are holding the thali - you need text that is clear, big, and never disappears.

Every feature on this site was designed with one person in mind: a devotee standing in front of the deity, aarti thali in hand, needing to read the next line. That is why we built screen wake lock, font scaling, Devanagari + Roman toggle, three reading themes, and the Digital Pothi builder.

AaratiSangrah is and will always be completely free. We are supported by advertisements so that sacred devotional texts remain accessible to every family - in India and in the diaspora worldwide.
