What is Aarti? - आरती म्हणजे काय?
An Aarti (आरती) is a Hindu devotional ritual where a lamp - usually lit with ghee or camphor - is waved in a circular motion before a deity while a sacred song of praise is sung. The word comes from Sanskrit "Aaratrika", meaning "to remove darkness." The glowing flame symbolises divine light dispelling ignorance.
Aarti is performed daily in millions of Indian homes - at dawn, noon, and especially at Sandhyakaal (dusk). During festivals like Ganeshotsav and Navratri, aarti is performed five times a day with great devotion and community participation.
The five elements of nature are all present in an aarti: fire (the lamp), water (in the conch), air (from the fan/incense), earth (flowers and durva), and space (the sound of the bell). Performing aarti is not just a ritual - it is a complete sensory offering to the divine.

Aarti (आरती)

Shankar Aartis
Lavthavati Vikrala (Shankar aarti) is performed at the start of Ganeshotsav puja as Lord Ganesha's father. The powerful tune evokes Shiva's cosmic dance.
Devi Aartis
Durge Durghat Bhari and Jay Ambe Gauri are the most sung during Navratri. Each of the 9 nights of Navratri has its own Devi form and aarti tradition.
Vitthal Aartis
Jai Jai Vitthal Jai Hari Vitthal - the soul of Warkari devotion sung at Pandharpur. Central to Ashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashi pilgrimages.
Datta Aartis
Triloka Sundara - Lord Dattatreya is worshipped across Maharashtra and Karnataka. The aarti is melodious and peaceful, sung especially on Datta Jayanti.
Hanuman Aartis
Aarti Kija Hanumana Lala Ki - powerful and energetic, sung on Hanuman Jayanti and every Tuesday. Hanuman is the patron deity of strength and devotion.
